Charles Oh, MD, is Chief of the Cardiology Division with the Phoenix VA Health Care System as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona – Phoenix Campus. Prior to establishing his lab at the Phoenix VA, Dr. Oh completed his residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, a cardiology fellowship at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, where he also served as an Assistant Professor of Medicine.

Dr. Oh’s laboratory focus is on the role of saturated fatty acids (SFA) on the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Three abstracts and two papers have been published on the activation of the p38α mitogen-activated protein kinase – dependent signaling pathway by saturated fatty acids leading to increased apoptosis of cardiomyocytes that may underlie diabetic cardiomyopathy in collaboration with Drs. Migrino and Reaven at the Phoenix VA and Dr. Kent Thornburg at OHSU. Ultimately their goal is translate the in vitro findings to potential therapies blocking this SFA-induced signaling initially in animal models, then eventually in human trials.
