Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program is a one-year fellowship designed for physicians seeking advanced training in interventional cardiology. Completion of an accredited ACGME Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship is required.
 
Established in 2003, the fellowship provides intensive clinical training along with opportunities for clinical or basic investigation under the direction of faculty mentors. Fellows gain broad exposure to invasive and interventional cardiovascular procedures. Fellows are involved in all aspects of pre-procedural evaluation, procedure, and post-procedural care and follow-up. The emphasis is on direct observation and hands-on learning with the ICF faculty members as mentors.  Fellows are trained in all aspects of coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention, including standard PCI, CTO PCI,  plaque modification techniques (rotational atherectomy, orbital atherectomy, and laser atherectomy), and intravascular lithotripsy.  Intravascular hemodynamics and imaging with iFR/FFR, IVUS, and OCT is emphasized.  Competence in mechanical circulatory support including IABP, Impella, and VA ECMO is part of the training experience. Fellows also get hands-on experience in structural heart procedures including BAV, TAVR, ASD/PFO closure, Mitraclip, Triclip, TMVR, TTVR, PVL closure. Fellows are also trained in coronary vasoreactivity testing.
 
Fellows rotate through a quaternary-care academic medical center, a large community hospital, and a safety-net hospital, providing exposure to a wide range of pathology and management approaches. Faculty have a wide range of expertise in interventional cardiology, structural heart disease, mechanical circulatory support/transplant, translational research, and clinical research.  The robust educational experience includes cath conferences, interventional fellow-specific didactics, core curriculum conferences, morbidity-mortality conferences, journal clubs, simulation technologies, and heart team meetings. We have had a 100% interventional board pass rate since 2019.

Applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited cardiovascular disease fellowship program. Applications are processed through the AAMC ERAS system.
