Message from the Director

The Sarver Heart Center at the University of Arizona has been advancing cardiovascular discovery and patient care for nearly four decades. Our physicians and scientists work together to understand the fundamental causes of heart disease and translate those discoveries into new therapies and lifesaving clinical innovations.

Sarver investigators have contributed important breakthroughs in cardiovascular science, including discoveries in heart regeneration and the development of new therapeutic strategies following heart attack. Our research continues to uncover the molecular and genetic mechanisms that lead to heart failure and sudden cardiac death.

Our clinical researchers have also led innovations that have transformed care worldwide. In 2003, Sarver investigators helped pioneer chest-compression-only CPR, a technique that has improved survival for patients experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. Researchers associated with the Sarver Heart Center also contributed to the development of the Total Artificial Heart, a device that has changed the treatment landscape for patients with advanced heart failure.

Today, Sarver scientists are advancing cardiovascular medicine through cutting-edge technologies, including advanced imaging, genetics, metabolism, bioengineering, and computational science. These efforts are helping us build a patient-centered therapeutics discovery pipeline focused on developing new treatments for cardiovascular disease, including rare and inherited heart disorders.

Community partnership has always been central to the Sarver Heart Center’s mission. Through public education, outreach programs, and collaborations across Arizona and beyond, we work to improve health, expand access to lifesaving knowledge, and support prevention and early intervention.

Together with our colleagues, trainees, and partners, we are committed to advancing cardiovascular science and translating discovery into better care for patients.
