"Innovations in Advanced Heart Failure"

Dr. Rogers is the chief medical officer for the Duke University Health System and a professor of medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Duke University. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and attended medical school at the University of Nebraska. He completed his internal medicine residency at Nebraska prior to research and clinical cardiology training at Washington University in St. Louis. Following his fellowship he remained on faculty at Washington University for 10 years prior to moving to Duke. Dr. Rogers’ clinical practice and research initiatives are focused on advanced heart failure. He served as the medical director of the cardiac transplant and mechanical circulatory support programs at Washington University and Duke. His research interests are focused on the clinical application of mechanical circulatory support devices, heart transplantation, and palliative care in advanced heart failure. He and collaborators also are developing new point-of-care testing aimed at improving the management of VAD patients.

He has authored more than 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology Heart Failure, New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is the immediate past treasurer for the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. He also was chair of the UNOS Thoracic Committee during the most recent modification to U.S. heart allocation policy.

Dr. Rogers has held several institutional leadership roles, including interim chief of cardiology and interim chair of the Department of Medicine. He served on the PDC Board of Managers, the PDC Finance Committee and the executive committee of the medical staff. 

He also has served on the board of directors for the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the American Health Association Mid-Atlantic Affiliate.
