RESEARCH & INTERESTS
Dr. Going is an expert in models and methods for assessment of changes in body composition during growth, and with aging. He is currently investigating the effects of chronic exercise versus hormone replacement therapy on bone, soft tissue composition and muscle strength in postmenopausal women and the role of exercise in obesity prevention in children.
Current projects Include:
Exercise, Hormone Replacement Therapy, Blood Lipids and Lipoproteins, a randomized prospective study of the effects of exercise and hormone replacement therapy on body fat and fat-free mass, blood lipids and lipoproteins in postmenopausal women (PI, funded by Arizona Affiliate of the American Heart Association).
The Bone, Estrogen, and Strength Training (BEST) study, a randomized prospective study of the effects of exercise and hormone replacement therapy on bone mineral density, soft tissue composition and muscle strength in postmenopausal women (Co-PI, funded by National Institutes of Health).
Women's Health Initiative: Vanguard Clinical Center, a prospective observation and intervention study of diet and hormone replacement therapy on chronic disease in women. The University of Arizona is one of three bone centers nationwide for the WHI. Dr. Going is responsible for quality control of DXA screening for bone mineral density assessments (co-investigator, funded by NIH).
Wise Women Walking Exercise Intervention Study - Phoenix, AZ, an ancillary study to the State of Arizona Well Woman Health Check, designed to assess the effects of aerobic exercise on body weight and composition, blood pressure, and blood lipids in middle-aged women (funded by Centers for Disease Control and Arizona Department of Health Services).
Wise Women Activity Intervention - Tucson, AZ, a randomized trial of exercise compliance and health outcomes with three levels of support based on the patient-provider model and social support theory conducted as an ancillary study to the State of Arizona Well Woman Health Check (funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Arizona Department of Health Services.
In addition to these projects, Dr. Going provides expertise in body composition assessment for the IRAS and CARDIA studies, long running multisite studies of CVD risk factors in adolescents and adults. He is also a consultant to studies at The University of Alabama at Birmingham (Obesity Prevention in Adolescent Girls) and Kaiser Permenente, Portland, Oregon (Exercise for Bone Mineral Density in Adolescent Girls) and he provides expertise in physical activity/exercise intervention for the Yuma on the Move project in Yuma, Arizona. He is the Co-PI (PI, T.G. Lohman) for (Trail of Activity for Adolescent Girls), NIH, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
