2027 Cardiovascular Symposium
A joint meeting with the University of Alabama at Birmingham
The Cardiovascular Symposium brings investigators, clinicians and trainees together across institutions to exchange emerging science, examine pressing challenges in cardiovascular medicine and develop collaborations that advance cardiovascular research and health.
Each year, the University of Arizona Sarver Heart Center convenes the symposium with a leading cardiovascular program while engaging researchers across disciplines and career stages. The third annual symposium, held in 2027, brings Arizona together with the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The program connects basic discovery with translational and clinical research through themed scientific sessions, early-career presentations and a trainee poster competition. Dedicated discussion and networking time allows participants to share new approaches, identify common research interests and build collaborations that extend beyond the meeting.
Where discovery meets cardiovascular care
Progress depends on questions moving in both directions—from the laboratory to the clinic and from patient care back to research. The symposium creates space for basic, translational and clinical researchers to challenge assumptions, share approaches and build collaborations across institutions and career stages.
A keynote address
Jianyi “Jay” Zhang, MD, PhD, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will open the scientific program.
Early-career participation
Dedicated opportunities for trainees and early-career investigators will include scientific presentations and competition with awards in basic and clinical research.
Room to connect
Poster receptions and dedicated networking time will give participants space to exchange ideas, identify shared interests and begin new collaborations.
Themed scientific sessions
Plenary sessions will connect basic discovery with translational and clinical research. Session themes are being developed with UAB.
Keynote
Jianyi “Jay” Zhang, MD, PhD, is a distinguished professor and chair of biomedical engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
His laboratory studies how the heart’s energy metabolism is disrupted after a heart attack and in heart failure, and how stem cell- and RNA-based therapies might regenerate functioning heart muscle. Much of this research uses large-animal models to help bridge laboratory discoveries and clinical trials.
Program
The 2027 symposium will begin Friday morning with an early-career investigator session. The program will continue with the keynote address, themed plenary sessions across Friday and Saturday, a trainee poster competition and dedicated networking time.
