James K. Liao, MD, has served as professor and chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson since January 2023, bringing decades of experience as a physician-scientist, cardiovascular researcher and academic leader.

Before coming to Arizona, Dr. Liao served as chief of the Section of Cardiology, the Harold Hines Jr. Professor of Medicine, and director of cardiovascular research and the Physician Scientist Development Program at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine.

An internationally recognized investigator in vascular biology and cardiovascular disease, Dr. Liao has maintained continuous National Institutes of Health funding for more than 30 years and has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications.
