LECTURE: Right Treatment, Right Person, Right Time: Progress in Precision Cardiovascular Care
“Imagine if the pills you took for heart disease were designed for you personally,” said Nancy K. Sweitzer, MD, PhD, director of the UA Sarver Heart Center, chief of cardiology and professor of medicine at the UA College of Medicine – Tucson.
“As an advanced heart disease cardiologist, I treat most of my heart failure patients with six or more medicines, all proven to help most people with this disease. We are working to better understand disease variation between people to individualize and simplify treatment of complex heart diseases.”
Join Dr. Sweitzer and Carol Gregorio, PhD, vice dean for innovation and development, co-director of the UA Sarver Heart Center and director of the Molecular Cardiovascular Research Program to learn about human "disease in a dish," induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology that has the potential to completely change medicine in terms of understanding individual variation, underlying disease mechanisms, transforming and personalizing drug discovery and targeting treatments – sometimes at the level of correcting a single gene mutation. It is the ultimate in personalized medicine, a mechanism to explore individualized treatments and cures in a patient’s own heart cells.
