TUCSON, Ariz. — A distinguished panel of physicians and researchers from the University of Arizona Health Sciences will get to the heart of the matter about careers in cardiology at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 15 at a free virtual event for middle school and high school students. The event will be livestreamed via Zoom.
The panelists will discuss the unique role of a clinical professional focused on cardiology in the medical and academic fields. Discover how their journeys and interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) led to their current roles. Presenters will also share how research has played a large part in the cutting-edge technology and advancements in cardiology.
Panelists:
Guy Reed, MD, MS, Dean, UArizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. Dr. Reed is an internationally recognized and renowned cardiologist, physician-scientist, educator and health administrator. Dr. Reed holds more than 30 patents. He has translated his laboratory research findings into an innovative, clot-dissolving therapy to treat patients with strokes and heart attacks, which is now in clinical trials.
Rebecca Vanderpool, PhD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Research Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering, UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson. Dr. Vanderpool’s research interests include pulmonary vascular disease and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Khadijah Breathett, MD, MS, Assistant Professor in the UArizona College of Medicine - Tucson, Division of Cardiology; member of the UArizona Sarver Heart Center; heart failure specialist with the Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Cardiac Transplantation Team at Banner – University Medical Center Tucson. Dr. Breathett’s research interests include reducing racial/ethnic and gender disparities in advanced heart failure and preventing those populations from developing advanced heart failure.
