Tucson Myofilament Meeting, May 23-26

The Tucson Myofilament Meeting is an international 3.5-day Sarver Heart Center conference that brings together approximately 250 scientists focused on the structure and function of the myofilaments that comprise the contractile machinery of muscle. Spanning topics from molecular biophysics to heart and skeletal muscle disease mechanisms and drug development, the meeting is known for its highly interactive, collaborative, and informal atmosphere, with strong engagement of early career investigators.

Traditionally held biennially at the University of Wisconsin, the meeting will continue at the University of Arizona beginning in May 2026, offering a distinctive Tucson setting that fosters scientific exchange and community building.

MD/PhD Student Honored with Scholarship

Ike Chinyere, MDThe Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC) selected Ikeotunye (Ike) Chinyere as a recipient of a Biosense Webster Inc. scholarship for Medical Students. The scholarship is awarded to select medical students who show promise in medical research, cardiology, and academic medicine. Chinyere, who graduated from the University of Arizona in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in physiology, may apply the $10,000 scholarship award toward his medical school education.
 
ABC states the scholarship was created to promote diversity in medicine, encourage commitment to eliminating health care disparities and support future cardiologists, while helping to alleviate medical student debt. Chinyere is pursuing a dual MD/PhD degree in the UA College of Medicine – Tucson, and is part of the highly productive Steve Goldman Research Lab in the Sarver Heart Center. Chinyere was acknowledged during the Spirit of the Heart Awards Dinner in Atlanta, GA, on October 15.
