Register online for the November 3 Sarver Heart Center Women's Heart Health Education Committee's "Heart of Women's Health"luncheon, focused on women and heart disease at Skyline Country Club in Tucson. Elizabeth Juneman, MD, will discuss why we should be looking more deeply into matters of a woman's chest, not just the breast. Khadijah Breathett, MD, MS, our newest faculty member (see more about her below), also will present on gender and racial disparities in health care. Nancy K. Sweitzer, MD, PhD, director of the UA Sarver Heart Center, will moderate the program. You'll also hear how heart disease has affected families in very different ways from Wanda F. Mooreand McKenzie Meza.
Dr. Gordon Ewy, director emeritus of Sarver Heart Center, professor emeritus of the UA College of Medicine - Tucson, and founder of the Sarver Heart Center Women's Heart Health Education Committee, will be honored with the Mary Anne Fay Women's Heart Health Advocate Award.

New Heart/Lung Technology in Cath Lab Allows Complicated Stent Procedure for High-Risk Patient
When 80-year-old Ann Martin arrived to see Joseph Alpert, MD, a cardiologist at Banner - University Medical Center Tucson, the blood supply to her heart was compromised almost entirely with only 5 percent of blood flow getting through due to severe blockages in all the heart's main arteries. She did not want open-heart surgery for coronary artery bypass nor to be placed on a breathing machine. Due to her high-risk condition, the structural heart team used new pump and oxygenator technology to support her heart and lungs, allowing a complex stenting procedure to be performed in the cath lab to fully support blood pressure while also permitting oxygen delivery to vital organs during the complicated procedure, said Kapil Lotun, MD.

Sarver Heart Center Welcomes Cardiologist Khadijah Breathett
The Sarver Heart Center welcomed Khadijah Breathett, MD, MS,
as an assistant professor in the UA College of Medicine - Tucson, Division of Cardiology and a heart failure specialist with the Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Cardiac Transplantation Team at Banner - University Medical Center Tucson. Dr. Breathett is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and advanced heart failure and transplantation. Dr. Breathett's clinical interests include heart failure, cardiac transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support devices. Her research interests include reducing racial/ethnic and gender disparities in advanced heart failure and preventing populations that experience disparities from developing advanced heart failure.
